The Towboat Spurlock Dumped its Cargo of Hobos Last Night Into Gallia County, Ohio. They Will Proceed to Washington via Freight. The Trip Was Uneventful; Lawrence County, Ohio, Refused to Give Them Provisions
Portsmouth Daily Times, Portsmouth, OH 14 Jul 1894 p1
The towboat Spurlock arrived here about noon Wednesday, having disposed of its cargo of Kelleyites, and started to return the borrowed barge to the Buena Vista Freestone Company.
The gang was dumped into Gallia County, Ohio, near the Lawrence County, Ohio line, about 9 o’clock last night. The trip was uneventful, the men were orderly and quiet, and there was no friction between the boat crew, the army, or internal strife.
The army camped Monday night above New Boston, resuming the trip Tuesday morning. Stops were made at Greenup, Burlington, and Ironton, but the boat did not land at the last-named place. Sheriff Gustin accompanied them and went ashore with one of the army’s officers. The police were waiting at the bank, determined to prevent the boat from landing.
The authorities there had previously decided not to help the army in any way, and they did not. A Huntington, WV, the police followed up the river a mile or two to prevent the boat from landing there, but they steamed on to a mile above Crown City, at Double creek, where they were dumped out about 9 o’clock.
The men said they would cross Ohio, jump a Washington-bound freight train, and finally arrive at the capital city with replete ranks. At any rate, Scioto County, Ohio, is rid of them. The army cost this county about $300.
