Most of the 1890 Federal census records were badly damaged by a fire in the U. S. Commerce Department Building in January 1921.  However, special schedules of the 1890 census enumerated Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

An act of March 1, 1889, provided that the Superintendent of Census, in taking the Eleventh Census, should have “cause to be taken on a special schedule of inquiry, according to such form as he may prescribe, the names, organizations, and length of service of those who had served in the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States in the war of the rebellion, and who are survivors at the time of the said inquiry, and the widows of soldiers, sailors, or marines.”  Each county in Ohio documented an 1890 Special Schedule.

Each schedule calls for the following information: name of the veteran (or, if he did not survive, the names of both the widow and her deceased husband); the veteran’s rank; company; regiment or vessel; date of enlistment; date of discharge; length of service in years, months, and days; post office and address of each person listed; disability incurred by the veteran; and remarks.

The 1890 census can be found on microfilm in the order below.  The city or township for each district and its enumerator was listed on the first page of that district ONLY.  Most districts were not page numbered.  There were a couple of districts that were correctly page numbered and a few more that had numbers on them but were out of order or missing page numbers.

Therefore, the pages were numbered, starting over at 1, for each district.  The line numbers correspond with the line numbers on that page.  Example:  Aid twp has pages numbered 1-6, followed by Decatur twp with pages numbered 1-5, etc.

The data does not include the veteran’s post office box or address.  It is, however, listed on the microfilm.  If there is an asterisk    ( * ) following the person’s first name, that person has more than one entry.  The following abbreviations have been used in the descriptions of disabilities, although the words may have been spelled several different ways on the microfilm:

gs = gunshot                           rt. = right                                 lf. = left                                    rheu. = rheumatism

ch. = chronic                           diar. = diarrhea                       dis. = disease                         inj. = injury or injured
