First Sunday School

About 1825 or 1826, at Haskellville, as near as I can ascertain, the first Sunday School or class was taught by Thomas Walton. He, in 1831, moved to the Rome farm, and there taught a class on Sundays, during the Summer time, and about 1840 or 1842

Kouns Chapel

Kouns Chapel was built for $800 on a lot costing $100. Unfortunately, during the 1913 and 1937 floods, the building was covered to the roof by water.

The “Mother of Baptist Churches” in Lawrence County, Ohio will open the observance of its 145th anniversary this weekend, with special services beginning at the Symmes Valley Baptist Church Saturday evening, and concluding on May 16.

Storms Creek Baptist Ironton, Ohio

In the year 1811, Rev. John Lee, relative of the famous General Robt. Lee, came from Virginia with his family, a wife and five daughters, and bought a farm near the mouth of Storms Creek. He with other Baptists, who had settled on farms along the river in the community, cut logs and built a large log church house on the river side of the road near the present Storms Creek bridge. Germans were to be found in most of the counties in the State of Ohio by 1810/ Some of them came directly from Germany, but the majority were from German-speaking communities in Pennsylvania and other parts of the east. Knowledge of these early Germans comes mostly from the reports of Lutheran ministers.
