On Thursday night in early March of 1852, a most atrocious murder was committed about five miles from this place, on the person of Justus Brewer and his wife. Mr. Brewer, I believe, was originally from New York or Vermont, but for several years a resident of Ohio, in Scioto and Lawrence County, Ohio.

Celebration at Burlington
I send you a brief notice of the celebration of the “Glorious 4th” at Burlington. It was mainly by the Sabbath schools of Burlington and with vicinity; including the two schools of the village and those of Perry Chapel, South Point, and Symmes Creek Chapel: small children, teachers, parents, and citizens, between 5 and 600 persons.
Ironton Bank and the Mob
The Ironton Bank, through an organized mob called to its aid, repulsed Gen. E. B. Tyler, of Ravenna, who presented a few thousand of its notes for payment a few weeks ago. It has been well punished for its lawlessness. Gen. Tyler was not a broker, but an agent of the American Fur Company, annually disbursing large sums of money in the purchase of furs in Ohio and Western Virginia.

Jacob Proctor, for whom Proctorville was finally named, was born in 1799, and now lives near the place, a remarkably well-preserved man. He formerly lived in Washington County, Ohio, and followed the river with a trading boat.

Joseph Imes Murder
Investigation into the mysterious death of Joseph W. Imes, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company agent, which has been underway since the well known local man died of a blow on the head several months ago, resulted in last week in the filing of two affidavits in the court of P. A. Burke charging Jim Flemmings, Lawrence Furnace man and Mervin Stewart, formerly of Ironton and late of Dayton, Ohio with second-degree murder. The affidavits were later withdrawn, however.
Detroit Toledo & Ironton Railroad
An ordinance granting the Detroit, Toledo, and Ironton Railroad Company the right to remove tracks from the Second and Vesuvius Street crossing, was passed by City Council Friday evening and it is expected this work will be started in the immediate future.

James M. Denison
James M. Denison (deceased). Was born in Lawrence County, Ohio on Nov. 24, 1818. When he was eighteen years of age, he went to Iowa, where he followed farming until 1852. He then crossed the Plains to California with ox teams, bringing his family with him.

Three sons and two daughters were originally from Germany and settled in Eastern Virginia. The exact location is unknown in Virginia. Abraham PANCAKE, the eldest of the three sons, was married to Lucinda DUNN in Virginia in the early Spring of 1759. Upon their journey west, the three brothers crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains into what is now known as West Virginia.

The opportunity came through one William Weih, a carpenter who was taken from an east-bound Frisco passenger Tuesday morning by a raving maniac. He was accompanied by Arthur Jenkins, who hails from the same town in Ohio.
