William A. Ferguson Emancipated Slaves

Anthony Ferguson and William A. Ferguson, executors for the estate of James Ferguson, deceased, of Madison Co., Virginia.

In this deed the emancipated slaves acknowledge receipt of monies ‘by the hands of William A. Ferguson.’

  • Noah and Winney, who have desired their freedom, were bequeathed by the will of James Ferguson, in our own right and in the right of our descendants hereafter named with their increase.
  • Simon and Violet, in their own right and the right of Abram
  • Ambrose Walker and Charlotte in their own right. (Note, I think there is a comma between Ambrose and Walker, but it’s very, very light, so not positive)
  • Barbara, in her own right and the right of Horace and Susan, infants
  • Short John and wife Maria, in their own right and in right of our children; Jane, Beck, Henry, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Ellen, Lucy Ann, Pricilla, Elleanor, Edward, and Daniel infants.
  • And for our grandchildren, James, an infant, and Beck, an infant.
  • Nancy in her own right and the right of her children Julia and William.
  • Charles, in his own right
  • William, in his own right
  • Lewis, in his own right
  • Laurence, in his own right
  • Albert, in his own right
  • Yellow John, in his own right
  • Noah and Winny, parents of aforesaid children and in their own right since 31 Oct. 1849.
