The death angel came to remove from our midst
about Sunday noon, one of Ironton's best-known residents in the person
of John J. Davis, whose name has been known here for many years, he
having the distinction of being the oldest living rolling mill man of
Ironton, who had seen many an active day in the bygone mills of the
city. We might here say the next oldest rolling man to Mr. Davis is
Thomas D. Hicks, the well known grocery man of North Fifth street.
Mr. Davis had reached his eightieth year and of late years,
has made his home out on the farm of his son, Louis Davis, a few miles
from this city.
He has been in poor health for the past few years, but his
death was mostly due to his advanced years. His wife and two
daughters, Mrs. William and Mr. Watkin Jones have have preceded him to
the beautiful shore several years ago. Four sons Louis, who the
deceased made his home with, Thomas J. Davis of this city, Ben and
Will of Chicago. Ben will be favorably remembered here before he went
to the Windy City as he worked in the Register office.
Thomas J. Davis was an excellent man of pleasing and
un-assuming disposition and he was highly esteemed by all, who ever
made his acquaintance. His remains after being prepared for burial, by
Gholson & Sons, were removed to the home of his grand-daughter, Mrs.
Edward Fisher on South Fifth street, where, as yet, the funeral
arrangements the funeral services were conducted this afternoon, Rev.
