"At Rest"
Submitted by Cynthia Heinemann
One after another of the old and esteemed citizens are passing
to the "bourne from whence no traveler returns." Last Friday
morning at ten minutes past eight o'clock, George Clarke passed
quietly over the mysterious river.
The deceased was born at Vanceburg, KY, Feb. 8, 1824. In
1849, he married Miss Rachel Montgomery, of Gallia Co, O, and six
years later removed to Ironton, where he has been engaged in
business ever since. From 1867 until last August he was associated
with his brother, D. H. Clarke, in the firm of Clarke & Clark,
wholesale grocers, which firm is too well known to need any
comment. Since his retrial from that firm, August 10th, his health
has steadily declined until the sad end, which came yesterday, was
not unexpected.
Mr. Clarke was one of the pioneers of Ironton and had become so
closely associated with her business interests that his departure
is a loss which will be perceptible to all. His life and deeds are
those of an upright, honest and conscientious citizen.
In his early life he spent some years in the steamboat business;
and about the year 1875-6 he made a trip around the world,
visiting all the points of interest on that trip. He was possessed
of a most wonderful memory, and took special delight in describing
his trip.
To his family and relatives the deepest sympathies of an entire
community will be heartily extended.
The funeral occurred at the Baptist church at 2 o'clock p.m.
Sunday.
