Nelson Bickley one of Ironton's best known and highly esteemed colored
residents died suddenly in the Goldcamp Hardware store, at Fourth and
Center.. The dec'd was 78 years of age and was born in Clinch county,
Va. He served throughout the Civil War as a member of the Union
Army... resident of Ironton for fifty years... was in the grocery
business at Eighth and Adams. The dec'd is survived by seven children
and 17 grandchildren. Of the children, five are sons and two are
daughters, as follows: Howard, Frank, Ernest and Henry of Ironton, and
Charles of Cleveland; the daughters are, Mrs. Gertrude FLETCHER who
lives on a farm back of the city and Mrs. Florence BRASSFIELD, of
Youngstown, Ohio. One of the grandsons is first lieutenant Frank R.
Arnold of Camp Sherman. One sister, Mrs. Amy ROYE, of Ironton also
survives.

Boy Killed - One day last week, a boy about 14 years old, by the name
of Bragdon, was killed at Howard Furnace. He was on an ore bench
working, when the dirt fell on him. A comrade was buried deeper by the
dirt than young Bragdon, but the handle of a shovel fell across the
latter's breast, which crushed out his life.

Mrs. Adren M. Brown, 79, of 223 Wilgus St., Proctorville, died
Saturday in St. Mary's Hospital, Huntington. She was a retired cook at
the Fairland School District.
Born at Chesapeake, she was a daughter of the late John and Ella
Ferris Freeman. She was a member of the Proctorville United Methodist
Church.
Surviving are her husband, John; a daughter, Mrs. Elois Sites, and a
son, Waldo Brown, both of Proctorville; seven grandchildren; thirteen
great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Hagley of California and
Mrs. Lillie Thompson of Columbus; five brothers, Alden and Harold of
Linnville, Kelley of Chesapeake, Charles of Crown City and Everette of
Scottown.
Services will be 3 p.m. Monday at Hall Funeral Home. Rev. Gerald Moyer
will officiate with interment in Rome Cemetery. Friends will be
received at the funeral home after 6 tonight.

Huntington Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m.
Friday at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, by the Rev. William
Reincheld. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery. He was born Dec. 18, 1891,
in Lawrence County, Ohio, a son the late Amos and Orlena Ferris Brown.
He was a retired employe of ACF Industries and a member of
Proctorville United Methodist Church. His wife, Adren Brown preceded
him in death in 1974. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Elois Sites
of Proctorville, Ohio; a son, Waldo Brown of Proctorville, Ohio; two
sisters, Mrs. Agnes Brammer and Mrs. Zilla Ferris, both of Chesapeake,
Ohio; three brothers, McKinley and Gillie Brown, both of Chesapeake,
Ohio, and Corbet Brown of Proctorville, Ohio, seven
great-grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Friends may call after

Waldo E. Brown, 70, of Route 2, Proctorville, died Monday at his
residence. He was born Jan. 9, 1918, in Lawrence County, son of the
late John W. and Adren Freeman Brown. He was a retired employee of a
former Chemtron Corp. of Huntington, W.Va He was a member, deacon and
adult Bible class teacher at Lucinda Baptist Church. Survivors include
his wife, Magdalene McComas Brown; three daughters, Mrs. Paul (Lois
Gail) Webb of South Point, Mrs. Jack (Sherry) Sexton of Crown City and
Mrs. Randy (Rita) Stevenson of Proctorville; one son, Frederick Brown
of Proctorville; nine grand-children; one great-granddaughter, and one
sister, Eloise Sites of Proctorville. Funeral services are Thursday at
1 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, Proctorville, by the Rev. Raymond Bragg

Died last Thursday. Burial at Woodland. Mr. Buchanan was born at
Galena, Kent Co., Maryland, Jan. 1, 1825. He came to Portsmouth in the
Spring of 1849, and in the Fall moved to Ironton. He was then a young
man of 24. He was a carpenter by occupation and formed a partnership
with the late D. W. Voglesong, and was engaged in much of the early
building of Ironton. He was the contractor on the W. D. Kelly
residence, and in the big brick dwelling at Mt. Vernon furnace. He was
interested in the Hurd planning mill, one of the first industries of
Ironton. He left the building business in 1856, and became an
undertaker, which calling he has followed ever since. He was married
to Miss Elvira Gholson, and five children blessed their union, but all
except one have gone before. He was one of that honored class of the
founders and builders of Ironton, who are fast passing away, but who
will be long remembered for their many virtues.
