Miss Cora Wakefield died Friday at her home in Proctorville. She was a daughter of the late Benj. Wakefield, one of the pioneer citizens of this county. She was a teacher of this county. She died from typhoid fever.

Died in Virginia - Was Lieutenant of John Brown - In action in Kansas which freed slaves in that state - Dec'd was born at Proctorville - Aged 85, died January 21, 1920 at his home near Annandale, Fairfax co., Virginia of heart trouble. Served in Civil War. He was born at Proctorville, Ohio July 2, 1834. When a young man he went to Kansas and joined John Brown's command and helped to free the state from slavery. Afterwards he traveled to Colorado and engaged in mining. (need end of obit - talks about his career)

WAKEFIELD, TIMOTHY       I.R. DEC. 20, 1860
A painful rumor reached here about a week ago that Timothy Wakefield, a son of Benjamin Wakefield, of Windsor Township, and one of the cleverest young men of Lawrence county, had been hung by a Vigilante Committee in Louisiana - on the charge of having taught a free mulatto boy to read, when he was down there last winter. We have not yet been able to trace out either the truth or the falsity of the sad report. Meanwhile the anxiety of the family is most intense.

Died from picking up electrical wire at a fire at the residence of William Kelly. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Walters of South 3rd Street, and almost 20 years of age. He was the oldest of a family of six children and was a native of this county. The remains were interred at Etna, where his grandparents, Squire and Katherine Walters, are buried.

Ashland, Ky., Nov. _ - William L. Ward, 79 years old, of Cannonsburg, Ky., passed away at his son's residence Tuesday. He was born in Boyd county. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by 3 sons and one daughter: Frank Ward of Buchannon, Ky., Robert at home, and Riley Ward of Ashland, Ky., one daughter, Mrs. Ethelbert Barber of Westwood, and two sisters, Mrs. D. B. Cornett of Moorehead, Ky., and Mrs. G. W. Cornett of Ashland, Ky. Burial at Caldwell cemetery.

Drowned - Last Saturday, employed as a teamster by the Penn Lumber Co., drove into the river at the east Ironton grade to water the horses he was driving. . . he was about 21 years old. He came here from Portsmouth.

Died last Tuesday, Mrs. Emma Cory Warfield, wife of Mr. Jas. F. Warfield, died at her home on Center street, after an illness of 3 weeks. She was first taken with typhoid fever, and this was followed by paralysis. She was born at Smithport, Penn., August 27, 1853, and so, was 44 years of age. She was married Nov. 27, 1884, and five children with her husband, make up a household that now mourn.

Congressman Warwick, the man who defeated Maj. McKinley for Congress, died last Saturday. He was Lieutenant Governor of Ohio once. Gov. McKinley attended his funeral.

Mr. Jno. Weaver has the sympathy of the entire community (Rockwood). About three weeks ago he met with a severe accident while working in Huntington. When he as just recovering, his wife died, leaving him and four small children to mourn their loss, two of whom were one week old. The two youngest were cared for until last Wednesday, and both died and were buried in the Poole graveyard. Mr. W. has surely had his share of trouble.

Jeremiah Weeks died Sunday afternoon at the home of his son-in-law, George Peterson of 295 Center street, aged 65 years. Mr. Weeks had been ill of dropsy of the heart for about five weeks. The dec'd was born March 13, 1826 at Baltimore, Md., and served during the Civil War in a New York regiment. He came to Ironton about four years ago from Pittsburg but had lived here for three years prior to that time. He leaves a wife and two children. The latter are: Mrs. Sarah Null ? of Pittsburg and Samuel Weeks of Johnstown, Pa.

News of the death of Moses Weil reached here by dispatch from Washington, last Friday. Died from gas fumes affixation. He has been a clothing merchant here for 14 years. For the past three years his family lived in Baltimore, where he had a pleasant home. He was buried at Baltimore.

Dr. J. F. White, a prominent physician of this county died at his residence near Lawrence Furnace, last Thursday, of pneumonia. Two weeks ago he was reported dead.... At the time of his death he was one of the Pension Medical Examiners for this county.

John F. White was born at Barboursville, Cabell county, Va., Jan. 18, 1839, died at the age of 58y 17d. Removing with his parents, Samuel L. and Rebecca White, to Ohio in 1846. Civil War in Co. M., 7th Ohio Calvary. Married on the 14th day of Aug., 1862 to Miss Sarah E. Waddell, of Centerville, Ohio with whom he had three daughters, Eva B., Carrie A., and Mamie R., all passing over the Dark River several years ago; their mother preceding them on Oct. 3, 1880. He married the 2nd time on 7th day of August 1882 to Miss Eva Nixon of Ironton, she dying November 1883. His 3 daughters following soon after, Eva B. died March 1884; Mamie R. died Feb. 22, 1887; and Carrie A. died Nov. 29, 1887. He married the 3rd wife on 17th day of May 1888, Miss Cathrine Rutroff, his present wife who survives him with two children, Charles L. aged 3 years and a little daughter aged six days old.

Fuller S. Wilgus was born in Proctorville, O., August 11, 1870, and at the age of 23 years was united in marriage to Miss Carrie E. Caldwell of Letart Falls, Ohio, December 27, 1893. To this union was born one child, which went to be with Jesus in infancy. He graduated in pharmacy from the Ohio Normal University at Ada, Ohio December 20, 1899. . . Died May 13?, 1902 aged 31 years 9 months and 8 days leaving his wife, and aged father, two sisters, Mrs. Mattie E. Miller, and Mrs. Virginia A. Brailey, and one brother, Irwin J. Wilgus. Mason.

J. W. Courtney is up from the South to attend the funeral of Capt. Wilkinson. He is talking of going to Brazil to take charge of a furnace. Capt. John W. Wilkinson, of the 7th U.S. Cavalry, died at Yuma, Arizona, on Tuesday of last week, and the remains were brought to Ironton for burial. The funeral takes place at the residence of Judge E. V. Dean, whose daughter, Lottie, was the wife of the deceased. Capt. Wilkinson had been sick for some time, but had returned to his command for duty, when he died. The deceased was an intelligent, high-minded, vailient officer. He belonged to Custer's famous regiment, but at the time of the massacre, he was with Reno, some miles away. He leaves a wife and four children, who came all the way from Arizona, with the remains. They will remain in Ironton, and make their home here.

A husband and three children remain: Mrs. Alice Moulton of Chicago, and Mr. Frank Willard, of Topeka, her son and daughter are here to attend funeral. Does not name third child.

Mrs. Evans of Knoxville, Tenn., who has been visiting in Chicago, Pittsburgh and other places, arrived here this morning and is the guest of Mrs. Christine Thomas. Mrs. Evans is the sister of Mrs. William Williams of Knoxville, Tenn., whose death occurred this week and whose body was brought here today for burial at Woodland, where other members of the family are buried. Mr. and Mrs. Williams were among the pioneer Welsh residents of this city, were proprietors of a grocery store on the corner of Sixth and Mill street. Mrs. Williams has three living sons, William, David and Daniel, all of whom were devoted to their mother. They all accompanied the remains of their mother to this city for burial.

Dies at hone in Chesapeake - was Civil War veteran and leading educator for many years - member of prominent Lawrence Co. family - John W. Willis, 75, Civil War veteran and for many years a leading educator of Lawrence county, died suddenly Wednesday at his home in Chesapeake (OH). Suffered a severe attack of influenza during epidemic of 1918 . . . resulted in heart failure. Mr. Willis entered the Union army at the age of 19, and served until the close of hostilities. He was a son of Elza and Elizabeth Ward Willis, members of pioneer families of Southern Ohio. He married Miss Eva Alice Boothe, daughter of the late Isaac Booth, and to their union were born the following children who survive: A daughter, Mrs. Edith Willis Kelley, of Huntington and three sons, Eugene P. Willis of Charleston; John T. Willis, of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; Lloyd R. Willis of Richmond, Va. Surviving members of his immediate family are a brother, Sidney Willis, and four sisters, Mrs. Julia Russell, Mrs. Ruth Smith, Mrs. Adam Shafer, and Mrs. Amanda Bennett, all of Aid post office, Lawrence county. Shortly after returning from the army Mr. Willis became a teacher in the public schools . . . He retired from teaching in 1895. In 1903 he was appointed postmaster of Chesapeake, an office which he retained for sixteen years. Burial will occur at Union cemetery, north of Chesapeake.

Drowned - Mrs. Sabina Willison, of South Point, was drowned in the Ohio River, opposite that place, on Tuesday evening last. Mrs. Willison was in a skiff, in company with Mr. Hiram Rankin, when the steamer BANNER run on to the skiff, with the above result. Mrs. Willison's body had not been recovered at last accounts. Mr. Rankin was injured somewhat by the collision.

Mrs. Jerusha A. Willson, wife of Dr. W. F. Willson, died at her home on Lawrence street, last Friday. Had ovarian tumor. She was born in Adams county, December 20, 1821, and so was over 76 years old. Her maiden name was Wilson and she married Dr. Willson at West Union, October 28, 1840. They moved to Ironton in 1851 and have since lived here. The husband is in his 84th year, lays sick in bed . . . Burial at Woodland. The pall bearers were David Nixon, E. Bixby, J. H. Moulton, John Snyder, Geo. N. Gray, and E. S. Wilson. Mrs. Wilson, the wife of Prof. Wilson, of Va., Mr. John Wilson, son of John O. Wilson, an Ironton school boy of many years ago; Mr. and Mrs. N. W. Evans of Portsmouth, were those from abroad who came to pay their last respect.

Creighton S. Wilson was born in Adams Co., O., Feb. 16, 1833, died at Hanging Rock, Ohio, June 18, 1897. He came with his parents to Scioto Co., when quite young …. In March 1855 he was married to Miss Frances Skelton, who, with seven children survives him, four children having preceded him to the better land. He served three years in the Union army and was in the "March to the Sea." Besides his wife and family, he leaves a brother and three sisters; Mr. George S. Wilson, of Nelsonville; Mrs. W. M. Remy of Burlington, Mrs. J. F. Brown of Missouri and Mrs. Joseph Hubbard of Illinois. His children are Mrs. Geo. Sheppard, Mrs. George Wallace, James George, Fred, Walter and Miss Ella Wilson, all of Hanging Rock.

Carmi Alderman of Third and Center streets was notified by wire that his brother-in-law, Dr. DeWitt Clinton Wilson had died at his home in Los Angeles, Calif. Friday night. The message came from Dr. Wilson's son-in-law, K. A. Miller. Dr. Wilson, had he lived until May 1st next, would have been 89 years of age. He was born at Burlington. He united in marriage to Miss Alderman, October 8, 1872 until she died June 18, 1830. Dr. and Mrs. Wilson had but one child, a daughter, Veatrice, who a number of years ago was married to Kent Miller, at that time a rising young lawyer of Ironton. When the Wilsons moved to California, Mr. and Mrs. Miller accompanied them. The Miller's have but one son, D. C. Miller, named in honor and after his grandfather. Dr. Wilson was in practice of medicine with Dr. Jonathan Morris, his brother-in-law, who married Dr. Wilson's favorite sister. Also see IET Feb. 06, 1935.

All who visited Marion, this county, in the seventies, and stopped at the Wilson Hotel will remember this kindly and good souled woman… She was buried at Marion.

Mrs. H. B. Wilson dies in New York - body returned to Ironton today for burial. Mrs. Henry B. Wilson, aunt of F. A. Bixby of this city, died at her home in New York early this week and her body arrived this afternoon over the C. and O. and was laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery. Mrs. Wilson's husband preceded her in death 20 years ago. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Cliff Buckman and Mrs. Sterling Beardsley of New York and Mrs. Paul Coomstock of Richmond, Ind. She was an aunt of Frank Bixby and a sister of the late Mrs. S. B. Steece and E. B. Willard.

Last Sunday night about midnight, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Wilson lost their youngest child, (Henry) Jean, after only a few hours sickness. The child was playing out of doors on Saturday, was quite sick on Sunday, and death came suddenly at midnight. Acute bronchitis was the cause of death. The little girl was 3 years and 5 months old, the charm and light of the household.

Martin Butler Wilson of Greenup, born Feb. 14, 1862, died Oct. 13, 1920. He was 58 years, 7 months, 29 days old at time of his death, which was caused by Pernicious Anemia. He was a miller by trade. He and his three brothers started the Wilson Mills, two of those brothers preceded him in death. In 1890 he was married to Viola Lee Wolcolt, three children were born to this union as follows: Mrs. Frank Allen of Greenup, Loret Jennings and Martin Loring at home. He is survived by his wife and the above named children, also one brother, Robert Wilson and one sister, Mrs. Fannie Sowards.

For years he was a bandmaster of every band organized in Greenup and was well known to every musician along the river from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, as he played with the band on many river excursions.

Burial Oct. 1(?) in Riverview cemetery, under direction of Undertaker Stapf.
Rev. H.B. Hester preached the last sad rites. The Greenup band rendered a few hymns on their instruments.

Mr. Wilson was well known in Ironton, having played there on numerous occasions. John Dellar, Ironton barber, played in Mr. Wilson’s band several years ago when he was a resident of Greenup.

William Wilson died at his home in Huntington, W. Va. on the 7th of October, 1885, was born near Marion, this county (Lawrence) on the 27th of February, 1824; he was married to Emily Higgins in 1848. They had eight children, two boys and six girls, seven of whom are still living. Mr. Wilson was a soldier in the Mexican War; also served in the Union army in the rebellion, in Capt. U. M. Payne's Co., 9th Va. He was wounded in the battle of Guyandotte. … His remains were brought to Marion from Huntington. The funeral services were held at the house in Marion, where he spent many years of his life. (poem).

A pioneer resident of Ironton, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Samuel Sample, on Railroad street Wednesday night, age 78 years. Born at Chillicothe, Ohio, Feb. 12, 1845. When he was quite young his parents moved to a farm near McArthur where he resided until he became of age. . . . he moved to Olive Furnace, thence in 1849 came to the then new town of Ironton, which has ever since been his home. He was a carpenter and builder and erected many of the first buildings constructed in this city. At the breaking out of the rebellion, he aided in raising the 1st Virginia Calvary regiment and commanded Co. G. He served until 1862 when he was disabled by a fall of his horse at Winchester and was compelled to resign. After the war he had charge of the mines at Vesuvius Fce. And conducted a store there. Later he engaged in the grocery business in this city . . . Mr. Winters was married twice. His first wife was Miss Mary Jane Parker, who bore him five children, one of whom died in infancy, another, Capt. W. H. Winters of the U. S. A. died in 1880. Thomas Winters, Jr., Aaron Winters and James H. Winters survive their father. Mrs. Winters died in 1851, and in 1852 Mr. Winters married Lavina Bush and by this union one child was born. This is Mrs. Samuel Sample. Mrs. Winters died two years ago. Mr. Winters turned the first shovel full of earth for the excavations for Memorial Hall, and he lived to see the building completed and occupied, and then his remains were the first to be carried through its portals to their final resting place.

John Witshorick, an aged resident of Sedgwick, died this morning at 3:30 o'clock. Mr. Witshorick was born in Germany 62 years ago and came to this country about a quarter of a century ago, most of which time he has spent in and about this city. He leaves a wife and one son to moun his loss. Funeral from residence of his son, Charles (Witshorick) Riets at Sedgwick. (do not have end of this obit. - smk)

Mr. Angus Wood, the only brother of Misses Lillie and Jessie Wood and Mrs. W. H. Nigh, of this city, died suddenly last Wednesday night in Mason county, Ky., about 7 miles back of Maysville. Mr. Wood and his wife had been aroused from their sleep to go to the home of a sick friend. While attending him, Mr. Wood complained of feeling badly....Heart disease is thought to have caused the death. Mr. Wood was about 38 years of age. He had charge of a large farm in one of the richest sections of the Blue Grass region, owned jointly by himself and his sisters. He leave a wife but no children. The Misses Wood, Mrs. W. H. Nigh and Mrs. Stanley Lee attended the services.

Dr. J. J. Wood, an old citizen of this county, died at his home in Fayette township, last Sunday, and was buried Monday. His age was 73 years. For a long time he was a resident of Ironton where he practiced as an eye doctor.

She was a cousin of the late Mrs. Hiram Campbell. Mr. Woodrow, husband of the deceased, formerly resided in this section and was for many years with the Ironton foundry and Mt. Vernon furnace. She died on Friday morning and removed a once prominent figure in the Cincinnati society. She was the widow of David Woodrow and the mother of Clifford Woodrow, Mrs. Wallace Shillito and the late Frank Woodrow. For 25 years or so she made her home at the Grand hotel, where she had a luxurious suite. She was 90 years old . . . She was a descendant of the Oliver Cromwell family.

One of the district's most colorful personage - a woman whose life story is a saga of American opportunity, romance and adventure. She was 90 years old last September 8th and died quietly in her room at the Hotel Marting (Ironton) Probably the only woman ironmaster in America's history. She invested in Old Centre Furnace, near Superior. She continued as owner and operator until 1906 when she sold to Superior Cement Co. She was born Sept. 8, 1856 the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. Washington Honshell. She had one brother and two sisters, now dead. (This is a lovely tribute and should be looked up and read by all)

Died - June 9, near Hecla, George Yingle, aged 7 years, died from a kick of a horse.

YINGLING, CHRISTIAN       I.R. SEPT. 18, 1856
Died at his residence near Hanging Rock on Sept. 12, 1856. Christian Yingling one of the PIONEERS of this region in the 69th year of his age. Born in Western Pennsylvania, on the waters of the Youhiogheny, April 24, 1788/ He removed with his father, Andrew Yingling, to the place called "Alexandria," on the Ohio river below the old mouth of the Scioto, in 1797, and in 1798 settled on the place in this county where he died. In the same year, Rev. John Kelley, who still survives, settled with his father, Luke Kelley, just below. At that time "Sammons," as he was called, (Simmons was the true name) a relative of C. W. Simmons, present treasurer of Lawrence county, lived in a cabin opposite Big Sandy. Next below, in order, came the cabins of Andrew Yingling, Luke Kelley, James Kelley, Vincent Ferguson, Peter Van Bibber and George Stewart - all that there were in what is now Lawrence county. Mr. Yingling was married Oct. 18, 1814, to Martha Lee, daughter of Rev. John Lee, first pastor of "Storms Creek Church" the Baptist Church of Ironton. He was a kind hearted man, an obliging neighbor, and honest citizen, and leaves a wide circle of friends.
