Lawrence County, Ohio Cemeteries -Inscriptions, Photos, Stories & More

*Denotes the records in the list below are from ‘Lawrence County, Ohio Cemeteries Tombstone Inscriptions,’ a collection of books published and sold in 1999 by the late Tom Clutters, Julian Barnett, and Perry Campbell. Perry donated all those cemetery books to The Lawrence Register after Tom and Julian’s death, along with their copyright permission.

These inscriptions are not complete. The birth and death dates only include those born or died before 1900. Tom and Julian passed away, and Perry’s health declined before they were completed.

These records are dedicated to Julian, Tom, and Perry, who worked tirelessly for years to record all the cemeteries in Lawrence County, Ohio. They were especially determined to ensure every veteran’s grave they found without a tombstone was marked and a veteran’s headstone placed where they lay in rest whenever possible.

I don’t see her name on the Ironton Death Indexes 1909-2000, but you might want to double check for a death certificate there.
Is it possible she died in another county or state? Being in Proctorville area, a lot of persons died in Huntington, WV hospitals.
Have you searched anywhere for her death certificate?

I’m working on confirming Jette T Diamond (1911 – 1976) is buried in Rome Proctorville Cemetery. I’ve checked the list of those buried there. I can see her parents, E. Wilson Diamond and Hope Diamond are buried there but I cannot find Jette T on the roster provided here. I thought perhaps she is buried in the plot with her parents but wouldn’t she still be listed if she has a separate headstone? She is on Findagrave as buried at Rome Proctorville Cemetery and someone posted a photo of her headstone. Her Findagrave Memorial number is 211294119 if that helps.

The Rome Cemetery is actually two cemeteries merged into one. The older section is sometimes called ‘Old Rome’ and the newer section is called ‘New Rome’, but it should be called just Rome Cemetery. Older people sometimes called cemeteries by different names, making it very confusing to keep track of all of the names.

And to answer your question, yes it is ‘Rome Proctorville Cemetery’ on findagrave.

I am trying to add some names to Findagrave, com but it keeps telling me there is no cemetery called New Rome Cemetery in Lawrence County. Since I found several sources showing that is the correct name of the cemetery but I am wondering if it merged with another cemetery or is called by another name. I see there is a Rome Proctorville Cemetery. Could that be what they mean instead of New Rome Cemetery?

I know that at Puckett Cemetery, there are 2 McCoy children buried without name plates, but are my aunt Mable McCoy’s children as they are in our plot (DePriest). How do we add them to the Pucket Cemetery list? My mother, Hattie DePriest, also has a infant (born deceased) buried there, but I don’t know name, date, etc. I know the infant was a boy and he is buried in our plot.

After carefully going back over the infirmary register, I have corrected the names and dates below. Plus there was another name (not sure if it is her). They are listed below by the dates they were admitted.

    M. Currington, Female (no age given) was admitted on March 1, 1876, and discharged on Apr. 11, 1876

Margaret Currington, Female, age 35, was admitted on Apr. 8, 1880, and discharged on Apr. 14, 1880

Margaret Currington, Female, age 55, was admitted on Feb. 4, 1889, she was born in Greenup County, Ky, admitted from Lawrence township, (there was no discharge date given for this entry)

Margaret Currington,, Female, age 36, was admitted on Sept. 1, 1889, she was born in Ky and discharged on Feb. 11, 1890

    I hope this helps.

    Martha,

We are piecing together what happen to Margaret Currington; still working on her life. I have the sheet from the children’s home that tells about her sons and mentions 2 men as their father.

Can you elaborate or tell what is correct on this, “Margaret Currington was admitted on two occasions, 18 Apr 1880 discharged 14 apr 1880.” Looks like she was discharged before she was admitted.

    Hi Janet,

I just checked the LawCo Infirmary record and found the following:
Margaret Currington was admitted on two occasions, 18 Apr 1880 discharged 14 apr 1880, she was 35 and, born in Greenup Co, KY admitted from LawCo. Her second admission was 1 Sept 1889 was 36 from Ky discharged 14 apr 1890.

The other Margaret Currington was admitted 4 feb 1889 was 55 years old born in KY, but there isn’t any discharge date for her. There wasn’t any Margaret Hood or McKnight in the Infirmary records.

Have you checked the children’s home? A Charles and George Currington was in there, it states their mother was Margaret Currington. There is additional information on them, let me know if you would want me to send it to you.

    Thanks for your comment,
    Martha

    Martha,
Back to Margaret A. McKnight (1843 to 1889 or 1889), we found her name has Hood and that she married a Hood, but we
see that she also was involved with Thomas Franklin McKnight and had a daughter, Margaret, by him. I can’t find any
marriage information. I am just checking to see if she might have had any other last name besides her maiden name, Currington, or her death name McKnight. Any light you may shed on this is greatly appreciated.

Thank you! I appreciate your help on this. I just found your reply and have shared it with others in the Currington line from Lawrence Co. Bless you!!!

Now, I have another question. Bethel Cemetery in/near Oak Hill, Ohio. I can’t find it in the Cemetery listings because I don’t know the sections of Lawrence Co. It is unmarked graves (just stones) around a pine tree in the woods and there is apparently a preacher, his wife and some children there. There are a few other graves around the pine tree. I want to see if I can figure out who is buried there and I will share the information with you for listing to the Lawrence Co. Cemeteries listings, if they are not there. I am in Greenup, Ky., so I don’t know a lot of important information, but very willing to learn. I will see if I can track down at least one person buried there to see what I can find on Ancestry and Family Search. Thank you once again for your work. You are a jewel of fine price.

    Hi Janet,

    Thanks for your comment.

I checked a couple of my records and did find Margaret Currington in Lawrence County, Ohio Infirmary. I also found her children in the Children’s Home. Do you have that information? The children’s home states that she died 18 Oct. 1898, and it does have some other information about her and the children.

She was in and out of the Law. County Infirmary and her last released date that I have found for her was 11 Feb. 1890. I haven’t finished going through the Infirmary record yet and will keep looking for her at a later date.

A lot of the inmates of the Infirmary and Children’s Home died there due to many causes, a lot were buried in the paupers section of Woodland Cemetery in Ironton in unmarked graves. I am also finding many of the inmates who died in the Infirmary are buried in Newton Cemetery in unmarked graves.

I hope this helps and will let you know if I find anything else.

    Martha

  13. Janet Brown

Hello, I have looked high and low for my gg aunt, Margaret A. Currington Hood. She may have been a McKnight also?
She was born in Greenup co. 1850 and died in Lawrence Co (as far as we know) 18 Oct. 1898. They lived in Perry Township and I’ve looked in every cemetery you list here for her. I have not looked in Scioto Co., or across the Ohio River at Boyd Co.

Can you help me or point me in a direction?

    Janet Brown
    Greenup, KY.

  14. Tom Caulley

I am looking for the exact location (Longitude/Latitude?) of the Caulley Cemetery. I Know it’s somewhere along Caulley Creek in Section 10 in Symmes Township. I have been there about 40 years ago, an know it’s on a High Hill.
