1. MATTHEW HAMILTON1
BUTCHER
I was born 1812 in Clarksburg, (W)Va, and died 7/18/1883 in Proctorville, Lawrence
County Ohio, page 272 of Record of Deaths.
He married LUCINDA TACKET 8/26/1832.
Notes for MATTHEW HAMILTON
BUTCHER
I:
From notes of Harvey Butcher:
He was the son of an unknown, named, Mr. Hamilton who
deserted his family. Mathew took the name of his mothers maiden name Butcher. Matthew was a large-strong young
man who became a professional prize fighter. When a young man he came to Guyandotte (W)Va for a championship match. This information I got
from my uncle Jasper butcher, who knew him very well.
buried in Sutter
Cemetery.
Directions:
From Chesapeake take route 7 up the river to route 243 (this is Bradrick), turn left on 243, go to the top of the hill (you
are in a saddle called low gap),
the cemetery is on the very top of the hill to your left.
From Ben Hale:
Family legend has it that MHB came from Rock Bridge
County Virginia to Martha WVA to participate in a prize fight. Martha is just up
the Ohio river from Huntington. He must have won the
fight because he bought 500 acres of land, possibly on Bear Creek.(look this up). There are still butchers on Bear Creek
assumed to be descendents of MHB.
On December 19, 1998 Ben Hale, Harvey Butcher, Baxter
Butcher, Patty Butcher Tyler and Richard Hale visited the grave. To get to the
grave yard go up the road mentioned above. Take the dirt road around the right
side of the hill. At the end of the road is a small trailer, behind the trailer is a pole barn type lean to.
There is a path to the cemetery on the right side of the lean to. The grave yard
is on a ridge, go out the ridge until about 10 or 20
yards from the last head stone. The grave is off the right (river) side of the
ridge just a few feet. The head stone is a rectangle with rounded corners. It is
about 2 inches thick and was standing upright.
Notes from Daniel Butcher:
It was not 500 acres but more like 150 acres. The deeds
say 75 acres more or less. However recent surveys of the properties indicate 150
acres. So much for the legend of 500 acres. I was
raised on this property.
Notes from Patty Butcher Tyler:
When I find who the parents of Matthew are, I will let
you know. I am working on that, the only problem is that records are a lot
more scarce for that time frame. My guess is that his father or his
grandfather was a William Butcher, and his mother or grandmother was
Sarah. They are old enough to be his grandparents. Matthew did not have any child named
William, but he did have a daughter named Sarah (aka
Sally) Sarah is the one who was married first to Sam Stanley that shot her (this account is in the
diary) and later married John Paul Childers. She had one child by Sam Stanley,
and 8-10 by John P. Childers..
email from Patty Butcher Tyler (PTyler107@aol.com):
I think I had promised to send the diary information to you and never
sent it. I found it this evening and thought I'd go ahead
and forward it to you. This was only two years of abstracts, Dusenberry was said to have kept this diary for about 50 years, starting in 1855 I think. I
hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
In my research so far I have come across what has to be other family members, in early Cabell County records. In personal property
records 1809-1850, I have seen that Butchers first came to
Cabell County in 1818. On these first tax lists there is a William Sr., a William Jr.,
a Samuel, and a James. Then by 1822 Reuben is on the lists, then by 1826
William Sr. is gone, I have to assume that he died. Then his widow Sarah
Butcher is on the lists, and another Thomas Jefferson. After 1828 Samuel is off the
lists, and I have found that he did die, as there are court records that back
this up. He had an orphan son,
William, who was bonded out. Matt shows up on the lists starting in 1833. It is my assumption that Sarah is either Matts
grandmother or mother. It would appear that she is too old to have
been his mother seeing as how in the 1830 census records she is in the 60-70 age
grouping, maybe not totally unlikely, but???
I think that Reuben and the other Thomas Jefferson have to be brothers to Matt. Part of my thinking on this
stems from that fact that Reuben, and Thomas Jefferson go with Sarah on the
same day to pay taxes, Matt did
too when he came into play too. James never did, as if he maybe lived too far away from them. I have found records that
indicate that he lived close to Twelve Pole Creek, which is mostly in present
day WayneCounty.
One last piece of information I came across, that I am currently
trying to find the info on. There is a pension record of a
Revolutionary War Veteran, who died on October 10,1825. His name was William Butcher and
he was in Montgomery's Infantry, MD. I find it really odd that
William Sr. probably died in this same time frame. He was on the 1825 tax list,
but those were always taken in the spring, from March to June. It could only
be a coincidence, I don't know. But I will look
anyway.
Also I am trying to pinpoint Lucinda's parents. I think they are
George W. Tackett and Elizabeth Peyton, they are the only ones
with a marriage record in the right time frame, they married in 1811 and
Lucinda was born in 1812. George was a wanderer, some years he is on the tax
lists for Cabell County, some he is not. I have also found him on tax
lists for Lawrence County
(William Jr. didn't seem to stay in one spot either, some years he is not on tax lists, but I still don't know where he
went). Also our Butchers have very close ties to the Peyton family, long
before Jeff Butcher married Susan Peyton.
I just thought
I'd pass along some of what I have found so far in my searches, maybe soon I will have the line past Matthew
completed. If I could just find the proof.

headstones confirming
their burial in this cemetery with dates.

From Ben Hale
A
little family history some of you may be interested in. My grandfather Lewis Martin Butcher and his brother, Charles Butcher
served in the War together. They
enlisted
in 1863 and served until the close of the
war. Were in Company
" I " , 13th Virginia Infantry. They took part in
the battles of Winchester, Halltown,
Berryville, second fight at Winchester, Fisher,s Hill, and Cedar Creek.
They went through all those battles and apparently neither of them were wounded. Mom told me she heard some one
ask her father, my grandfather if he ever killed anyone.. He said " He
hoped not."
The war may have had some kind of an effect on him, however. From what mom said he must have attended church. When she was a little girl the
only church within many miles was Methodist, and miles were miles
in those.
When she was about six they moved and were probably closer to a
Methodist congregation. I'm
assuming he was Methodist.
When an
invitation was given he always responded.
This, I think continued as long as he lived, but he never professed
Christianity.
Notes for LOUISIANA
WILKS:
Notes of Harvey Butcher:
She and her husband purchased land about 1/2 mile above
their home. After her husband died, she and her 3 sons, Mat, Mart and Ben, moved
up there. The old homestead was dismantled and a new 2 story replaced it in
1935. My father became the owner and raised his family there. Grandmother died
in March 1933. She was a great Christian lady - a hard worker. She loved to talk
about the times when she grew up and also her childhood. She lived with us a
large part of her time - so I became very close to her. She and her husband were pro union and
against slavery. When John Wilkes Booth killed Lincoln many of the Wilkes family
left the "e" out of the name Wilkes because John Wilkes Booth was a descendent
of the Wilkes family which was a prominent family in England and the ancestors
of Benjamin.
buried at Bradrick Cemetery, Union
Township, Lawrence County OH
Notes from Ben Hale
I
don't know whether Richard has it in the information he has put
out but the facts about the Wilks
Homes are my grandmother Butcher who was a Wilks lived in the log house when she was three years
old. I feel sure
she was born there but never did know. that means my
great grandfather, Benjamin Wilks lived there in
1850.
My
grandmother liven in that house on Bent (The old maps in the
Lawrence County Court House has it Ben creek) Creek During the Civil War. She and my grandfather and grandmother wrote to each other apparently all
during that war.
Grandmother had an old trunk witch contained many wonderful things
(They would be worth a fortune) Among them were many bundles of love letters written by
two love birds There were bound in ribbon but not so tightly they couldn't be
unbound.
Bill, Harvey and I read lots of those letters. We really enjoyed it, they
were well written.
Grandfather told of many interesting experiences, many
places he had traveled, but he never told of any battles or bad
experiences. As
I remember there were pretty positive. They were great people. I
never knew my grandfather. He died before I was born, but I was around
grandmother from as gar back as I can remember until she died at age 86 I was thirty-three so I
knew her well.
She was a saint. Grandfather
was also a very good man.
Mom said "she never knew him to use any kind gutter language,
never heard him say any kind of an off color word, and never knew him to
tell anything but the absolute truth. She said" she heard someone ask him if
he ever killed anyone, knowing that he had served in the war. He said " He hoped not." So they were wonderful people. You had wonderful
ancestors.
Love you all

Notes of Harvey Butcher:
Ben lived all his life near the mouth of Bear Creek in
Lincoln County, WVA
He was a great church member (Baptist
faith).
Notes from Daniel Butcher
Ben and Lucy are buried at
Enon Cemetery at Salt Rock,
WV.
For the first 12 years of their marriage, Ben and Lucy
operated a bed and breakfast home at the mouth of Bear Creek. they would welcome river men who
were using the Guyandotte to float their timber logs
from Lincoln, Logan, and Wyoming Counties to Guyandotte to be loaded on barges. According to Baxter,
Jessie's son, every spring and fall, the timbermen
built raft-like floatilla's with the logs and floated
them down the Guyandotte whtn the rains raised the water levels in the river. He also
mentioned that at that time, the Guyandotte River was
much deeper and wider during the early 1900's and that it did have barge traffic
up to West Hamlin and Branchland in Lincoln County. The run-off from stripping
the virgin forest of timber and the beginnings of coal mining in the upper parts
of the Guyandotte in Logan and Wyoming county filled the Guyandotte with
sediment and made the river impassable except for the
spring and fall rains. By 1900 Ben and Lucy abandoned their Bed and Breakfast
and settled into farming on Bear Creek. Ben and Lucy moved to a 90 acre
homestead further up and built a house where both he and Lucy lived in until their deaths on November 9, 1946
nd February 20, 1952 respectively. Jesse and Irma took
over the house and raised their kids there as well.

11. MATTHEW HAMILTON3
BUTCHER (THOMAS
JEFFERSON2,
MATTHEW HAMILTON1) was born
1860, and died 1919 in Lawrence County Ohio. He married (1) EFFIE F. BUTCHER. She was born 1872. He married (2) LILLY BELLE BUCKINGHAM 7/17/1878
in Cabell County West Virginia. She
died 3/11/1911.
Notes for MATTHEW HAMILTON
BUTCHER:
Notes of Harvey Butcher:
Matthew's 1st wife died and he married a girl Effie
& moved to Henson Hollow about 1/4 mile from the Forest Hill Golf course. He
died in 1923 and was buried in the Union Hill Cemetery. His wife Effie remarried Jim Paul who
was mayor of Chesapeake at the time.
Union Hill Cemetery, Fayette Township, is on Tallow
ridge which is between Chesapeake and buffalo
creek. The grave is on the left side
of the entrance road about 30 yards past the flag pole. The grave stone
gives his death as 1919 and his wife's name as E.F.. There is a place for
his wife's death on the stone but the date of death is not given. Her birth
date is given on the stone as 1872.
Note from Patty Butcher Tyler (PTyler107@aol.com )
I really hope that you will change this as Effie (as far
as I know) did not bear any children with Matty,
these children are Matty's and Lilly
Belle Buckingham Butcher's
children. Lilly died March 11, 1911
and is buried in Peyton Cemetery, West Hamlin,
WV. Matty
only lived 8 years longer than she did. Matty and Lilly married in
Cabell County on January 17, 1878. Their two sons, Reuben and Robert are buried in this cemetery with
her, along with Reuben's wife, Lydia Estep Butcher and two of their
(Matty's and Lilly's) Peyton
grandchildren. Reuben and Lydia both
died in 1919 also (same year as Matty, I have heard that there was a widespread flu epidemic
that year). I did not know that this cemetery even existed, until one day
my dad just happened to remember it. It is hard to say how many other
relatives we might have there as there were about 40-50 unmarked graves, and
only 7 with headstones. All but one, relatives of
mine.
For a few other notes on Matty
himself: Matty owned land on Coleman Creek, near West Hamlin, WV, in fact he sold this land
to my G Grandfather Press Blankenship, (father to Irma, who married Jesse
Eugene Butcher, my pappaw). Press' son, Troy Blankenship (age 82) lives on it
today. This Peyton Cemetery is on a hill across from Coleman
Creek.
I found out that my pappaw,
who always went by the name of Jesse Eugene, was actually Amon Jesse Eugene Butcher on the Cabell County Birth record books...............something my dad had
never heard all his life! I had a hard time with the fact that you had a Charlie
Butcher listed as a son of Matthew H.'s, (a
brother to TJ and Lewis Martin) I could find NO record of him at all! Well a lot more digging brought about
the explanation.
Charlie is apparently what he was called, but his actual
name was John T. I could find plenty of records for him, John T., but not
Charlie. We did (my sister and I) finally find some in the name of Charlie, and
pieced the mystery together.
