TURNER, CLARE, CUNNINGHAM, LOSEY, MANNON and CAPLINGER FAMILY
OF
LAWRENCE COUNTY OHIO

Written and researched by Martha J. Kounse

The following is a transcript of Martha’s correspondence with a researcher residing in Florida.

In the 1810 Va. census index there are Elijah TURNER, Sr. in Bedford Co., Va on page 483 and on the SAME PAGE there is a Elijah TURNER, Jr., which I think is your Elijah. There were NO MARTIN TURNER’S listed in Bedford Co., VA in the Va. Census Index of the years 1810-1840. I cannot state for CERTAINTY that they are Father/Son, due to the fact I have no access to those census in my area, but at some points in this line of work, we must presume and then work from those presumptions trying to prove and then document the sources. In 1820 Va. Census Index, we find Elijah TURNER (Probably the son b. 1805/1810) but the other Elijah TURNER, Sr. is not listed leading us to believe he has died between the years 1810-1820. That lead me to search the wills of Bedford Co., Va. and I found a will listed for an ELIJAH TURNER, Sr. and the date was 23 Oct 1820!! There was another will listed for a RICHARD TURNER date 27 June 1769.I find Elijah TURNER in Bedford Co., VA census in 1830 and 1840, then he shows up in Lawco, Oh in 1850 census. They are in the 1860 census in Lawco and then disappear after that, no further records of any of the family. Do you know if Elijah and Catherine died in Lawco., Ohio? I have searched the deaths, wills, estates, etc. from 1860-1880 and find nothing! As a matter of fact, I find no record of Elijah and Catherine anywhere in the Lawrence Co., Oh records. I did find Sarah TURNER’s marriage to George Stevenson in Bk. 4 Page 154 in Lawco, do you want a copy of the original?I searched in Cabell Co., (W)VA records (across the Ohio River from Lawco., Oh) and found an Elijah TURNER as one of the purchaser’s in the sale of an estate of a Thomas CARTMILL recorded in Will Bk. 1 Page 237 in March 1838. I don’t know if this could have been your Elijah or not, because yours was in the 1840 Bedford Co., VA census index, but he could have been here visiting or traveling and stopped here on his way through and bought some material (the book did not state what he purchased, but I think it was household goods or the such). Then he may have liked this area so well that he then went back to Bedford Co., VA and moved his family here in Lawco., Oh. That is my own theory, though. I have no actual proof as of now, though.Richard TURNER’S Will (This gives the name of the Parish form which he attended, if you have a Mormon Church, or LDS in your vicinity, it may turn up more information. You need to search the records and see if there are any births, deaths, baptism records, etc. from there. If you do not have access, I can do this for you, if you would like) I THINK Richard was an Uncle to your Elijah, Jr. and a Brother to your Elijah, Sr. Elijah Sr. named one of his sons Richard and both of the men named one of their sons JEPE TURNNER, which indicates that was probably their Father’s name. I would look for that name-JESSE TURNER-in early ship passenger lists, nationalization, declaration of intentions, etc.As far as Martin TURNER being on the marriage license as Elijah TURNER bondsman, I believe he was another Uncle or other relative. If you notice Elijah TURNER, Sr. died in 1820 and Elijah TURNER, Jr was married 10 years later, so his Father’s brother or another relative stepped in and signed for him. Elijah Jr. was only 10-15 years old when his Father died, so perhaps another possibility was that this Martin TURNER took over guardianship and raised him. We need to check the guardianship papers in Augusta and Bedford Co., VA and look for these names. It would be worth looking into for a Will from Augusta Co., VA of Martin TURNER, it may turn up more info and helping us put some more name and places together. It looks like the TURNER family was very good about documenting everything and you are VERY FORTUNATE in this.

I have been having good luck in finding Elijah’s children in Boyd Co., KY.
I feel there is a lot more information to be added if you want me to explore the Boyd Co., Ky courthouse. On the census the daughter Fanny (CUNNINGHAM) CAPLINGER stated that she owned 500 dollars worth of property and her Husband died (according to the last child’s birthday) between 1861-1870 and that makes me think maybe he was a victim of the Civil War. They were living in VA or WVA at the time of the last child, so it would be in that state probably where he enlisted. I think that is worth looking into because the Civil War records are easily assessable and has lots of genealogy information in them, usually.

And the daughter, Amanda, was living in a hotel in 1870. I heard from a reliable source that a lot of people stayed in this hotel in Boyd Co., KY after or before they were married. I find no other information on her.

I didn’t find ANYTHING on Martin TURNER, the son, I believe he was already in Northern Ohio maybe with his brother, George. I didn’t find anything on Julie or Emma in Boyd Co., Ky. maybe they stayed in Lawrence Co., Oh or moved elsewhere.1). I wonder if the Harriet T. TURNER married a Jesse C. CUNNIGHAM 12 Oct 1853 Lawrence Co., OH BK5 PG 39 was your Fanny? Jesse was a Civil War Vet from Lawrence Co., OH

2). I looked for info on Elizabeth & Michael McCARTY and found in the Greenup Co Cemetery Book a Michael D. McCARTY 1/14/1857-3/13/1934 buried in the Brammer Cem in Wurtland, KY located close to the Ohio River and a Minnie Elizabeth McCARTY 1864-1897 in the same cemetery.
