1. MATTHEW HAMILTON1 BUTCHER I was born 1812 in Clarksburg, (W)Va, and died 7/18/1883 in Proctorville, Lawrence County Ohio, page 272 of Record of Deaths. He married LUCINDA TACKET 8/26/1832.

Notes for MATTHEW HAMILTON BUTCHER I:

From notes of Harvey Butcher:

He was the son of an unknown, named, Mr. Hamilton who deserted his family. Mathew took the name of his mothers maiden name Butcher. Matthew was a large-strong young man who became a professional prize fighter. When a young man he came to Guyandotte (W)Va for a championship match. This information I got from my uncle Jasper Butcher, who knew him very well.

buried in Sutter Cemetery.

Directions: From Chesapeake take route 7 up the river to route 243 (this is Bradrick), turn left on 243, go to the top of the hill (you are in a saddle called low gap), the cemetery is on the very top of the hill to your left.

From Ben Hale:

Family legend has it that MHB came from Rock Bridge County Virginia to Martha WVA to participate in a prize fight. Martha is just up the Ohio river from Huntington. He must have won the fight because he bought 500 acres of land, possibly on Bear Creek.(look this up). There are still butchers on Bear Creek assumed to be descendents of MHB.

She and her husband purchased land about 1/2 mile above their home. After her husband died, she and her 3 sons, Mat, Mart and Ben, moved up there. The old homestead was dismantled and a new 2 story replaced it in 1935. My father became the owner and raised his family there. Grandmother died in March 1933. She was a great Christian lady – a hard worker. She loved to talk about the times when she grew up and also her childhood. She lived with us a large part of her time – so I became very close to her. She and her husband were pro union and against slavery. When John Wilkes Booth killed Lincoln many of the Wilkes family left the “e” out of the name Wilkes because John Wilkes Booth was a descendent of the Wilkes family which was a prominent family in England and the ancestors of Benjamine.

More information on the location: on top of hill next to tree line is a grave stone for MUNSELL. Facing this gravestone the grave is supposed to be 10 feet or so to the left.

From the records of Ben Hale:

William Richard Hale, father of Ben Hale Sr. was born in Huntington, WVA, Sept 20, 1880. He was born out of wedlock. Because his mother had no way to care for him, she gave him away to strangers at age two. They lived out in the country and one day his grand father (A.J. Hale) came walking by not knowing he was there or that he had been given away. He recognized his grand father and grabbed him around the leg with both arms and would not let go. His grand father was several miles from home and tried to persuade him to stay there until he could go get a horse. The boy would have none of that. So he went home with his grand father and lived with them until about age 12 when he left because his uncle was mean to him. He lived with different families and helped on farms. At age 17 he was living with a family at the mouth of Charlie Creek, Sybene, Lawrence County, Ohio. He met Stella Butcher about that time. She also lived on Charlie Creek. Soon after that he went to the states of Oregon and Washington where he had an Uncle (Richard Hale) and worked in the wheat fields while there for two years, came back and dated Stella for a time. Went back to the west, stayed two or three more years. A while after he came back, he married Stella. He was one of the best men who ever lived. He was so kind and gentle. Good to his wife and children. He never used rough or fowl language, no profanity. He did not drink or use tobacco. He was an excellent worker, but slow an deliberate. He seemed to have a quiet simple, happy peaceful life until he was drowned Oct, 17, 1921

Deanne is a very charming and intelligent student during her growing up. I was so closely associated with Ivadelle that she was as if one of my sisters. I so regarded Ivadelle, that I always thought of Deane as my niece. Deanne married a big strong, tall-husky boy from a very good family – the Ben Hunt family. Merrill was a fine athlete and a good moral boy, But I didn’t think he or any one was good enough for Deanne. Now that Merrill got into the family I see that Deanna was the lucky one. She and Merrill have two sons Merril and Andy – both good boys. Aunt Ella’s husband uncle Cad died while his children were very young. Ivadelle was six or 7 and Mathew about three. I attended his funeral which was preached in the Baptist Church, owned by Harden Smith and being used also as a school house on the Chesapeake airport. The funeral was preached by Baptist Preacher Joseph (Joe) McKee who was a Civil War Veteran.

When first married Ben and Bessie lived in West Logan. They rented a house, bought all the furniture, bough food, then had a Preacher come there and marry them. They later moved to Mud Fork to be closer to Ben’s work where he was a meat cutter for Island Creek Stores at Verdunville.

They moved to Aricoma and lived only a few months. Then uilt a new house on High Street. (84 High Street where they lived from 1939 until 1947). Kiser Hale, Bessie’s father built the house at a cost of $1,300. It was a nice little two bedroom house next door to Bessie’s parents.

They next moved to West Logan just up the hill from the old home place.
