Biography:  Jane Nance  was  the  daughter of  Daniel and Lavina (Kingery) Nance.  She married to William Joseph Stumbo, a farmer, on 30 May 1847 in Lawrence Co., Ohio. Thomas R. Woodruff, a Justice of the Peace, legalized the union.  He was a widower and at the time of the 1850 census, they had eight children living at home.  Jane was his third wife!  He was born c. 1795 in Greenbrier Co., (West) Virginia.  They lived in Mason Twp., Lawrence Co., Ohio.  Janes child William Henry, our ancestor, was born illegitimate.  The father is not known.  In the 1850 census, a Martha Nance, age 8, is listed with the household - possibly another such child of Jane born out of wedlock.  In 1850, they lived in Windsor Twp. and Josephs real estate is valued at $1500.   Jane was living at the time of the 1870 census in Mason Twp., Lawrence Co. and is listed as the head of household.  Her husband William had died about 9 years earlier.  In 1870, her real estate in valued at $1000 and personal estate at $200.  She still lived in 1880, at that time being in Windsor Twp., Lawrence Co.  She could neither read or write.

1)  William Henry H. Nance, our ancestor.  See separate entry.

2)  Eliza  Stumbo,  born c. 1848  and married  to Joel Mannon.   She is listed in the 1880 census with Jane (Nance) Stumbo at 32 years of age and is listed as being a "servant".  At that time, she could not write.

3)  Martha, born in 1849, aged 10 months in the 1850 census.

4)  Mary Ellen, born c. 1849.

5)  Barbara, born c. 1850.

6)  Melvina A., born c. 1852 and married on 22 April 1871 to James H. Fullen.

7)  William Aaron,  born in 1855 and married Sarah Hardy.  He died in 1918.  He is buried in Lodge Ridge Cemetery, Lawrence Co., Ohio.  He was a farmer and was illiterate.
8)  George W., born c. 1856 and married on 12 November 1883.

9)  Thomas Jefferson, born c. 1857.   At age 22, he could not write.

10)  Jacob Henry,  born in 1859,  he married to Victoria  DeLong and died in 1939.  He is buried in Lodge Ridge Cemetery.  They had ten children.  At the time of the 1880 census, she could not write.

11)  John C. Breckenridge,   born  25 December 1861,   after  his fathers death!  He married first to Mary Ellen Kingery on 19 July 1883.  His second wife of Anna Belle Dillon.  John had 8 children - all sons - and died on 2 November 1936.  He is buried in New Zion Baptist Cemetery.  
        a. William H., born 24 June 1884 and died 1971.  He married to Ida Belle Callicoat.
        b. Alpha, born 6 July 1886, Lawrence Co., Ohio.  He married to Nancy Edith Callicoat on 4 November 1907.   During World War I, he did not serve, because he failed a medical examination, "because of being underweight".  He died in Huntington, West Virginia in October, 1968.  They had four children.
        c. Calvin, born 3 July 1888.  His wife was named Stella.
        d. Ernest, born 23 March 1891.  He married Elva Nelson.
        e. Clarence, born in December 1893.  His wife was the former Flo Shoemaker.
        f. Everett, born in 1896 and died before 1900.
        g. John Leonard, born 2 May 1899 and died young.
        h. Raymond, married Eva Vitatoe, spelling of her last name not certain.  He died in 1976.
