1905 February 2nd: Clear all day. Groundhog seen shadow all day. Ground covered with snow. Cold. At home sick
18th: Shut down furnace. (see March 6, 1905)
March 6th: Furnace went on.
14th: Snow storm. Froze hard.
15th: Ground covered. Froze hard.
May 12th: Hail storm.
August 15th: Drivers strike.
16th: Strike settled.
September 16th: Saul Wade and C. H. Ralph went squirrel hunting at Pine Crick Sept. 15 &16. Found one dead one that had starved to death.
18th: George Eble died. 83 years old. Pearl McKnight died.
October 11th: First fire in stove at mine. Raining.
November 7th: Ed Ralph and son at Ironton Nov. 4th to 7th.
14th: Commenced to lay foundation for Charles Rauch’s house on corner 5th and Oak Streets.
1906 January 13th: Charles Rauch went to housekeeping.
February 2nd: Clear and cold. Groundhog saw his shadow all day
4th: Snow at night
5th: Ground covered with snow. 5 above zero.
6th: Cold and clear. 4 above zero. Snow still on. Too cold to thaw away.
14th: James A. Hunter died at Fresno, California February 12 at 8:30 A.M. Age 60 years. Buried Feb. 14 at Fresno.
25th: Sunday. Sick at home. Called Dr. Eakman.
26th: About gone up or down all day. Got doctor in evening. Was about pegged out.
27th: Snowed all night. Over one foot snow.
28th: Sick as hell, and can’t help it. Nice and clear and warmer.
March 1st: Clear and nice. Snow still on the ground.
2nd: Warm and clear. Snow about all gone. Sick at home.
5th: Went to coal bank. Weighed 120 pounds. Cold and cloudy. Spitting snow.
6th: Frost in morning. Warm in the day.

September 3rd: George Middleton and C. H. Ralph went to Ohio Furnace hunting Sept. 2nd and 3rd. Got 6 squirrels.
6th: Clint Perdue hurt his leg. C. Klein went to Columbus, Ohio to Fair.
October 18th: M. P Ralph and family at Ironton.
22st: Sunday. Took dinner at Charles Rauch’s. M. P. Ralph and family was with us.
23rd: M. P. Ralph and family went home. Went as far as Ashland with them. (Last dinner with them, Sunday, 22nd.)
24th: Mrs. A. H. Keller married to Mr. Wright.
1907 January 2nd: C. R. Richey got home from California.
27th: C. R. Richey went away.
March 5th: Snow storm. Snow went and froze hard at night.
26th: Clint Perdue’s ankle hurt by new mule jenny.
April 2nd: Mine inspector here. Found scales OK. Back here 16th April.
9th: Blizzard and snow storm. Snow and cold at night.
10th: Cold and stormy, like winter.
12th: Snow storm. Bad as any in winter.
13th: Snow on ground and stormy.
14th: Cold. Froze hard at night.
15th: Cold and clear.
16th: Local option election in Ironton, Ohio went wet.
29th: C. H. R got his back hurt at coal mines.
1907 May 6th: Went back to work.
9th: John M. Corns died.
22nd: Mr Oscar Richey and wife sailed for Europe.
29th: John Klein married.
June 8th: Dave Grossman hurt. Fall of slate. Collar bonefractured and side hurt.
July 19th: John Harvey died. 93 years old.
September 5th: C. Klein gone to Columbus. I killed 1 squirrel. First one this year.
8th: Bess Bagwells baby boy born.
13th: Took cow to Ensingers. Heifer 6 weeks before to Melingers.
October 10th: Bess Bagwells baby boy died.
25th: Mrs. Mamie Boyce and Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Ralph went to Gallipolis.
29th: Got home from Gallipolis.
December 7th: Pushing ending. Price 3 cents car.
18th: Snow storm. First snow to amount to anything this winter. Hanging on trees.
1908 February 1st: Snow blizzard.
2nd: Clear and cold all day. Went back and took his hole with him, poor groundhog. Had all kind of winter for 8 weeks. Warm over day and freezes the night.
3rd: Cold and clear.
4th: Cloudy. Big snow at night. River full of ice. No boats running from Pittsburg to Cincinatti.
5th: Rain.
8th: Andy J. Jones died.
11th: Warm and cloudy. Sick.
13th: Mrs. James Stewart died 12 oclock midningt.
14th: Herman Baldwin, the teamster, got his velentine as freeman and chum of _____Mittenhauser. What a pair to draw to. Alma J. Ralph and C. H. Ralph both sick at home.
24th: Went to work. Commenced to build 14 x 14 bedroom. Cost $162.50
26th: Big snow storm.
27th: Big snow storm.
28th: Snow.
March 10th: Ora and children moved in with us. River almost a flood. 48 ft. at Ironton.
18th: Too warm to wear a shirt. Rain at night.
19th: Cold enough to wear an overcoat.
26th: C. Klein planted his potatoes March 25 & 26.
27th: Big frost at night. Sowed lettuce.
April 2nd: Forze. Ice.
7th: Rained.
8th: Rained.
24th: Planted potatoes.
27th: Charles Leipsig, driver, got mule’s leg broke.
28th: Killed mule.
1908 April 30th: Snow storm. Hail and rain. Froze ice at night.

6th: Mrs. C. H. Ralph went home with Fred Russells on steamer Greenlie.
7th: Cold like winter.
8th: Rain and wind storm. Bought mule from Nance. Price $100.

15th: Thomas Miller, bank boss, died. At Kelly Mines 6 years.
21st: Andrew Rauch died.
23rd: Mrs. Samuel Flemins died.
July 2nd: Sold old cow. $40.00 cow and calf.
22nd: Leo Ebert died.
28th: Joseph Gillen died.
August 21st: Curt Ralph and wife at Ironton.
24th: Curt Ralph and wife leave. Drove from home in buggy.
September 16th: Stewart Bagwell’s girl baby born.
22nd: Filled cistern. Dug dry well at home Sept. 22-24.
29th: Local option election in Lawrence County. Went dry. 1,530 votes. City went dry 67.
October 1st: C. H. and A. J. Ralph, Leon and Clifford Richey fishing Oct. 1st. to 4th. Camped under a rock 2 nights. Got 2 fish: one 2 lb., one 39 lb. catfish on bobline.
29th: Thursday. Local option went into effect 10 oclock pm. Everything dry.
November 3rd: Ron Johnson elected for congress over T. H. B. Jones.
6th. J. G. Lane. Loads of posts.
14th: Saul Flemins and Clemens girl married.
19th: Bess Bagwell married to Charles DeLong. (see Sept. 8 & Oct. 10)
December 24th: William Smith and son John and family left Ironton for California.
? 25th: Erold and Clifford took dinner with us. ______family at Mrs. Foxes. We had pheasant for dinner. Clifford killed it out at the bridge rock, Pole Cat Hollow.

14th: At Hanging Rock fishing. “Water Haul” C. H. and A. J. Ralph, George Middleton, Clifford, Leon, Audrey and Jimiie Richey all took dinner under a rock camp.
23rd: Jas. Piketon knee hurt. Fall of rock.
September 2nd: Sells Bros. Show at Ironton in Beechwood Park. C. Klein gone to State Fair.
21st: Mine inspector John Burke here. His first trip.
October 21st: Went fishing at Hanging Rock. Slept under Rock by myself, C. H. Ralph.
24th: Wm. Smith got home from California.
November 2nd: Tuesday. Election day. Mayor Charles Golden reelected over T. J. Kennedy for mayor by 122 votes.
7th: Ezekial Harper took dinner at Ironton.
15th: Valentine Newman died. 76 years old.
December 7th: Chas. Peters Sr died. W. H. McGuggin died.
8th: William Richardson died.

1910 January 13th: John Klein’s first baby boy born.

April 22nd: John Burke, mine inspector here 2nd time.
29th: Mr. Jas. E. Eakins fell dead on Center St. 76 years old.
July 7th: Mrs. Westlake died.
22nd: Pat Gallagher hurt in mine at Terre Haut, Indiana. Hurt freeing self.
26th: Pat Gallagher died.
August 9th: River down to 30 inches.
23rd: 18 inches. C. Klein got back from California. Lazy as ever.
September 1st: Erold went to Pomeroy to work.
5th: Erold Richey come from Pomeroy.
20th: Cow found calf.
26th: Sold the Clifford cow to John Cook for $45.
October 18th: David Nixon died.
22nd: Miss Mary K. Richey left Ironton for Arizona.
25th: Henry Miller, William Tate and Jessie Tate fight at mine.
November 8th: Late election. Gov. Harmon elected. Democrat. 100,000 majority.
December 3rd: River 9 feet. Coal barge raise from Pittsburg. First for over 3 months.
4th: Snowed at night. One foot deep on the level.
7th: Turned cold. Snow still on. Snow never got entirely off till Dec. 28th. Navigation supension on river from Cairo to Pittsburg on account of ice.
8th: Paid tayes $23.67.
11th: Snow storm fell during day. 7 inches on the level. C. H. Ralph, Kelly Mines, Ironton, Ohio.
13th: Mrs. Eliza Schafer died. Albert Hille killed on D. T. & I. railroad in a collision.
16th: Mrs. Ralph sick from 16th to 30th. Dr. Eakman was her doctor.
17th: Art Hanson had leg amputqated.
19th: Sstopped work at coal mine.
25th: Christmas at home. Alma sick. Stayed at home with her 3 weeks. Coal cost $1.50 ton out of the _____mine run.
1911 January 1st: Sunday. Warm and cloudy. Ice all out of river. Tow boats running 16ft. stage.
21st: Thomas Harrison died.
February 2nd: Groundhog day. Clear and cold. 6 weeks winter after the hog went into his den.
17th: Bennett Russell at Ironton Feb. 17th to 20th. Cold and stormy. Ground and trees covered with sleet and ice. Snowing.
26th: Mrs. David Grosman died.
March 9th: Gerard Goble died. 84 years old.
15th: Thomas Floyd moved out in Kelly house.
25th: Marie Russell and Harry Mills married at Gallipolis.
1911 March 30th: Snow storm.
April 1st: Ground covered with snow.
4th: Filled cistern.
18th: C. H. and A. J. Ralph went to Pomeroy on steamer Ohio. Went from Pomeroy to Gallipolis on train.
19th: Went home on steamer Tacoma. Hail storm at Gallipolis.
20th: Ed Ralph and wife at Ironton. Went out to mines 6 pm.
21st: Cold and sprinkling rain.
23rd: Mrs. Anna Baldwin, wife of Ed Tipton Sr, died.
29th: Saturday. Coal mines stopped for good. Put gas in Nail Mill. Weighed all the coal for 28 years. Last day at mine.
May 8th: Went to Malleable Works.
June 22nd: Phillip Miller at Ironton.
August 6th: Ironton A. Kelly died at Ashland. Born on Sunday and died on Sunday.
31st: Labor Day. Goerge Middleton died at Ashland, Ky.
September 14th: E. P. Ralph died at Gallipolis.
November 7th: County and city election in Ironton. T. J. Kennedy elected mayor by 74 votes over “Kid” Colettt. Kennedy 1060 votes, Collett 992. Both wet men. 68=74 official.
11th: Bennett Russell and Erold Richey come up to Malleable.
12th: Bennett went home. Charles Rauch and Audrey Richey spent Sunday at Malleable. Blizzard snow, sleet and rain. Captain Vance died.
13th: Froze hard.
15th: Erold Richey went to Meigs County.
22nd: Sick at Malleable Plant. Called Dr. Eakman 12 oclock midnight. Granma and Leon stayed all night with me.
23rd: Snow storm. Jimmie stayed at night. Went home in morning.
24th: Still snowing. Some better.
25th: Sarah Furnace worked up all stock on hand and blowed out indefinately. Erold Richey still up in Meigs County.
26th: Worse. Called Dr. Eakman.
28th: Some better.
30th: “Thanksgivin.” Cool and sun shining. Erold got home 29th. Was up to furnace morning. Granma still staying with me at the Malleable. Am sick, but getting better. Leon stayed at night. Went hunting with Ted Thanksgiving. Come up in evening. Stayed all night.
December 1st: Friday. Erold went to work at Furnace. Sarah Furnace went out of blast (see Aug. 17, 1912). Leon went hunting afternoon. Came up and stayed all night.
2nd: Leon went home noon. Stella Busch, Audrey and Jimmie Richey came up in evening and Granma cooked supper for them. Went home on street car.
3rd: Worst blizzard and rain and snow storm this winter. Erold stopped and got his supper with us. Leon come up at 6pm and stayed all night. Come at noon and took dinner with us. Went back to school.
1911 December 4th: Ora come up with letter from Clifford to Granma in afternoon. Was by ourselves at night.
5th: Clear and cold. Granma wrote to Clifford at Fresno: No. 1659 F St. 6th: Leon come up in evening. Got coal and water. Brought letter to Granma from Chester and went home.
7th: Clear and warm. Granma wrote letter to T. J. Harper, Pomeroy. Leon up in evening. Went back home.
8th: Clear and warmer.
9th: Clear and cool. Leon went to Jas. Howells hunting. Jimmie come up and stayed all night.
10th: Sunday. Cloudy and warm. Margaret Webber, Audrey, Helen Cook, Leon and Jimmie took supper with us.
11th: Cloudy and disagreeable. Rained in morning. Wrote Chester. Jimmie come and stayed at night.
12th: Rain and warm. Went down and paid taxes $15.21. Took dinner with folks down home. Leon up in evening and went home. Audrey come up in evening and stayed all night. Went to school in morning.
13th: Cloudy in forernoon. Clear and cool afternoon. Darby Kelly died. 77 years old. All day by ourselves.
14th: Cold and drizzling rain. Very disagreeable day. Leon up in evening. Went home.
15th: Rain all day. L. Hilgeberger stopped in forenoon. A. J. wrote to Clifford 1659 F Street, Fresno, California.
16th: Cloudy and very windy. Leon come in evening. Stayed all night.
17th: Cold and cloudy. Audrey and Jimmie up in evening. Took supper with us and went home.
18th: Nice winter day. Clear and cool. Darby Kelly buried at Kelly Cemetary.
19th: Clear and cool. Leon up in evening. Fixed Jimmie’s shoes. Stayed all night. Went home in morning before breakfast.
20th: Cold and cloudy. Leon up in evening. Stayed all night.
21st: Sold and cloudy. Sent cards to Chester and Clifford. Leon up. Stayed all night.
22nd: Drizzling rain. Foggy and very disagreeable day. Leon and Edna come up after school closed. Edna stayed. Leon went home at night. Still sprinkling rain. Sent T. J. Harper and Les Paine postals at Pomeroy, Ohio.
23rd: Cool and cloudy. Went downtown. Edna was all the company we had. “Pauline” Miller married at 12 oclock noon.
24th: Snow storm. Bad day. Erold, Leon and Edna took dinner with us. Audrey, Leon, Jimmie and Edna for supper. Jimmie and Leon went home. Audrey and Edna stayed all night.
25th: Monday. Cold and cloudy. Stayed down home at hights.
26th: Rain all day. Stayed down home all day.
27th: Leon and Jimmie stayed with Granma while I was down home. Come up in morning with Ted. Snow storm. Regular blizzard. Got letter from Chester.
28th: Cold. Jimmie went home in evening.
29th: Cold and cloudy. Leon and Erold took dinner with us at the Plant. Leon stayed all night. Went home in morning.
30th: Drizzling rain all day. Very disagreeable. Jimmie stayed at night.
31st: Sunday. Last day 1911. Joe Shafer and wife, Tom Charlton, George Ferry and brother, Audrey Richey, Leon, Jimmie and Erold Richey in afternoon. Leon and Jimmie stayed at night. Granma sick. Hoarse. Could not talk. Wrote to Chester.
1912 January 1st: Monday. Granma sick. Hoarse. Could not talk. Went down home with Jimmie. Leon stayed at night. Ora, Audrey and Edna stopped for a few minutes. In evening. Had been up to Meeks.
2nd: Ground froze and spitting snow. Leon with us.
3rd: Snow flurry. Leon stayed till evening. Went home. First night we was alone for over one month.
??????????B30 3rd: Cold and cloudy. Leon come up in morning and got Ted. Come back and stayed all night. McKeon killed growing hen. Gave it to me. First hen to lay got 4 eggs.
4th: Cold and snowing. Granma and Leon cooking old hen. Audrey stopped in evening and ate the gizzard and went home evening. Leon stayed all night. Worst wind storm this winter.
5th: Cold and very windy. A real blizzard all day. Snow. In afternoon Leon went home.
6th: Cold and cloudy. Eggs snow. Afternoon Jimmie come up and stayed all night. Leon come up and went back home. Got glasses by mail.
7th: Sunday. Snowed. Jimmie went home at noon. Had no visitors all day.
8th: Snow on ground and warmer. 6 eggs to date. Rain in afternoon. Snow storm till midnight. Turned cold. Went down to 3 above zero before 5 in the morning. Erold went to Cincinnatti.
9th: Clear and cold. Snow on ground. River full of running ice. Navigation suspended. Leon up in evening. Set trap and went home. Got one rabbit.
10th: Clear and warmer. Nice day. Leon took supper with us and went home in evening. Erold got home from Cincinnatti. Granma wrote to Clifford.
11th: River full of ice. Snow storm afternoon. 9 eggs. Leon up and home.
12th: Clear and cold. 5 inches snow on ground. Leon come up. Stayed all night. Froze hard.
13th: Me and Erold went to Columbus. 11 below zero 7:30 am. Leon went home in evening. Chief George reinstalled as Chief fire department.
14th: Sunday. Warmer. Leon and Charles Rauch took supper with us. Went home 8 oclock in evening.
15th: Cold and cloudy. Snowing part of the day. Got 50 cents feed at Rumbles. Owe Rumble $5.40 for chicken feed. Erold got home from Columbus Sunday at noon. Come up to furnace Monday morning.
16th: Clear and cold. Granma got letter from Clifford. Leon come up in evening after school. Went back home.
17th: Clear part of the day and warmer. Thawing in the sun. Had home phone installed in the McKeoun house. George Ferry first one called us. Audrey 2nd. Home phone 434K. Clifford 1248 J Street, Fresno, California.
18th: Clear and warm. Thawing. Snow most all gone. George Ferry called on us. Was tanked up. Jimmie come up in evening. Stayed all night. Snowed in night and turned cold and froze. Got a letter from Ethel Ralph.
19th: Cold and cloudy. Leon come up and stayed all night. Went home next morning.
1912 January 20th: Cold and cloudy. River full of ice. Jimmie stayed all night. Went home Sunday noon.
21st: Clear and cool. Mr. Schafer called on us for a short chat. Audrey come up. Brought Erold’s keys. Went home with Jimmie. Leon took supper with us and went home in evening.
22nd: Clear and warmer. River full of iced. Minnie Rucker to see us afternoon. Leon up in evening. Stayed all night.
23rd: Clear and warmer. Snow all gone. Leon stayed at night. Home in morning.
24th: Cold and cloudy. River full of ice. Leon stayed all night. Wrote post cards to Chester and Clifford Richey.
25th: Ice about out of river. Leon up. Stayed all night.
26th: Cloudy most of the day. Jimmie up in evening. Stayed all night. Got letter from Chester.
27th: Cold and cloudy.
28th: Cold and cloudy. Audrey and Jimmie up to see us and took dinner with us. Leon for supper and all went home.
29th: Rain and fog. Dismal day. Wrote to Clifford 1248 J Street, Fresno, California. None of the boys up.
30th: Disagreeable weather.
31st: Ora and Uncle John come in morning. Uncle John took dinner with us and went to Portsmouth in afternoon. Leon stayed at night with us.
February 1st: Snow storm. Leon stayed night. Wrote to Chester.
2nd: Cold and cloudy. Groundhog day. Freezing forenoon and cold and sunshine in afternoon. Leon stayed at night.
3rd: Cold and cloudy. Some ice in river. Snow storm in afternoon. Audrey and Jimmie come up in evening. Took supper with us and went home. Leon stayed all night. Big snow. Got letters from Chester and Clifford. Chicken fight.
4th: Sunday. Clear and cool. Charles Rauch to see us. Leon up afternoon. Had chicken.
5th: Cold and cloudy. Fell and hurt my wrist. By ourselves all day. Olive machine shop burned.
6th: Clear and cool. River full of ice. Gates’ Cigar Factory burned. McKeoun’s famous rooster broke his neck flying off the roost. Leon come up in evening.
7th: Some warmer. Cloudy most all day. Spitting snow now and then. River full of ice. Leon come up in evening. Went back home.
8th: Clear and cool. Nice winter weather. Got 50 cents feed, 25 cents meal for chickens. Leon up in evening. Back home.
9th: Cold and cloudy. Sick. Not able to go downstairs. Conrad Klein stopped to see me. Leon up and stayed at night.
10th: Cloudy. River full of floating ice. Sent Lisann postal birthday. 11th: Partly clear and somw warmer. River full of ice. Stage 5 feet. Sick. Not able to go away from the Plant.
12th: Cloudy and warmer. Snow all about melted. Turn cold in evening. Freezing. Got letter from Chester. Leon up in evening. Stayed all
night.
13th: Cloudy and cold. River full of ice. Leon up in evening and went home. Wrote to Dr. Hanp(?), St. Louis, Mo.
14th: Cool and cloudy. Ora sick. Wrote to Chester. Leon up in evening and went back home. Ice very thin. Gorged above.

1917 January 1st: Stayed up till the bells and whistles blowed the old out and the new in. It rained between 1 and 2 oclock, then froze. The whole earth covered with ice. Turned warm and foggy by 8 am. Everthing thawed out. Ground covered with mush ice. Got letter from Chester. First letter this year. Leon was here for a few minutes. Went out to Richey place. Got in trouble with one trespassing. Drawed gun on them. Went to George Ferry’s and had quarrel with Mrs. Wright over telephone. Took his wife to Portsmouth in evening. Mrs. Ratcliff, Mrs. Folger and Mrs. Jos. Schafer called to see us.
