Many of the pioneer settlers of Lawrence County were veterans of the American Revolutionary War, fighting along the frontiers of Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York, or in the colonies’ eastern battlegrounds. By the time the War of 1812 broke out with Great Britain and its Indian allies, many families had settled the valleys and hills of what is now Lawrence County, and several of the men joined the western militia in that war. U. S. Naval hero, Capt. James Lawrence, was to be memorialized in name when the new county emerged in 1816. Others later responded to the call to arms against Mexico in the 1840s, but it wasn’t until the Great War Between The States erupted in 1861 that a general call to arms sent hundreds of Lawrence Countians to the battlefields. ******** Lawrence County Ohio Veterans of Rev.
