NEW!  Please help me find William Isitt!

I am trying to trace a distant relative named William Isitt, who was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1815 and emigrated to the U.S., arriving in New York in April 1842 on the "Sheridan". I have a copy of a letter that he wrote to his brother and sister in Wales on July 17th 1848. His address at that time was Hanging Rock, Lawrence County, Ohio.

Other than this letter, and the record of his arrival in New York, I have been able to find absolutely no record of William Isitt in the U.S.

I am wondering if you have any ideas, or if you can suggest someone who could undertake some paid research for me.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

Mildred Vance Courtney

Submitted by admin2 on Sat, 01/02/2010 - 11:10pm.

Mildred Vance Courtney murder

I am a cemetery researcher for Medina County, Ohio and have come across a story from your county that intrigues me. On June 2, 1930 in Ironton, Ohio a woman was murdered. Her name was Mildred Vance Courtney and she was murdered - they say - by a man named Leroy Duty. I would like to obtain any information I can on the case itself (was Leroy Duty caught? Convicted? Details of the crime - why did he do it?)

My interest in this? Well, I came upon a newspaper article in Medina County's newspaper that tells of a man's body that was run over by a train. It appears that he was stowed away on/under the train and fell off. Medina County police believed the man answered the description of one Leroy Duty who was wanted by Ironton police on a first-degree murder indictment. Now, Duty had several physical characteristics which one could easily identify him by. The problem lies in the fact that the train mutilated most of these.
The corpse - whomever it was - is buried in a potter's field in Medina County - that much is known. What I want to known is whether or not Ironton police determined that it was Leroy Duty or did they disagree. If it wasn't his body, did they ever catch him?

The article that I found was in the July 4, 1930 issue of the Medina newspaper and the man was killed by the train on July 2.

I would be interested in any information I could get that would detail the case and how it eventually came out (Ironton/Lawrence County newspaper headlines, police reports, etc.) Attached is a copy of the death certificate for Mildred Vance Courtney which I got online. If there is anything more you
need to know from me please ask. I am contacting whomever I can so that I can try and get some answers about this. After all, there may be a murderer buried in one Medina County cemetery.

Thank you, Mike McCann (Medina County Cemetery Preservation Society)mbgemm@sssnet.com

Looking for Marting

Submitted by admin2 on Tue, 12/29/2009 - 8:58pm.

Looking for Marting Pictures

In the "Image Gallery" of "Lawrence Register" on the internet under the "Families" heading at the bottom of page 1 is the image "Marting House".

This, of course, is the house at Fifth and Adams Streets originally built by Col. H. A. Marting. This photo appears to me to have been taken prior to 1950. I have never seen this image before and wondered who might have submitted it. Actually, my root question goes deeper than this. I am searching for any photo of Col. Marting, his wife Margaret Duis Marting or his daughter Nellie Marting Lowry and wondered if the person who submitted it might have any images of these three individuals.

I would be pleased if you would pass this message on to the person who submitted it.

Willis Family Files

Submitted by admin2 on Fri, 11/06/2009 - 1:54pm.
Hi All: I'm wondering how to find The Willis Family History story by Hugh Willis that was on the old web site. We are doing a family book, Elza Willis is part of our family line, and we really need to get those stories... Stuff like that was so special, I hope those stories do not drop off the site. I learned so much reading about extended family connections, it explained connections I knew existed but had no clue how to connect. I was finally able to locate or connect names that are not in our direct line and read how our families were a community... Thanks Harold Sword(s) FrCoGenHistSoc

John Adair

Submitted by Barbara Bauer on Sat, 10/10/2009 - 3:08pm.

Hello!

I'm happy to find this forum. I'm searching for information about a ggg grandfather John Adair (or Addair/Adare/Odare/Adear). He was born in Montgomery County, Virginia, around 1780, and later settled in Cabell County, West Virginia (later Logan, and then Mingo County). He was in Lawrence Co. Kentucky in 1823 and at the time of the 1830 census.

According to family lore, he died at Hanging Rock, Ohio while working on a steamboat - he was ashore cutting wood, gashed his leg with the axe, and bled to death. An alternate version of the story has him working on a canal. I believe this occurred sometime in the 1830's, but we have no record.

This appears to be a good source for both canal and steamboat history - can anyone give me hints where I might track this down further?

Thanks,

Barbara

info on rural & small town Ohio law enforcement in the mid 1800s

Submitted by Jane on Sat, 10/10/2009 - 7:54am.

I am doing research for an historical romance novel set in southern Ohio in the mid-1800s. I understand sheriffs even at that time were elected officials but I haven't been able to find out anything about deputies. Were there any in Ohio at that time? How were they hired? Could someone get hired from out of state based on letters of recommendation?
Also, if anyone is familiar with the local judicial system at that time, I could use help there as well. Between probate judges, common pleas judges, mayors, etc., who did what? Specifically, issues regarding the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for any info for my G-grandfather William Arnold. He was married to Virginia Stapleton and had many children including my grandmother Esther Mae Arnold. Williams father was Drewey Arnold and Drewey may have descended from the Pamunkey Indians from Amherst Virginia. Virginia Stapleton Arnold was burried in Red Hill or Mt. Pisgah Cemetery but William was burried somewhere else? Any info at all would be helpful.

Casey Family, Woodland Cemetery, Dr. Casey

Submitted by flappery on Tue, 09/22/2009 - 11:32am.

(I may have not placed this query in the proper place. If not, please help me.)

I am looking for information on John and Melissa Minerva "Minna" Casey, both from Kentucky and believed have lived in Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH. Melissa is listed as a widow in 1900, living with children ages 9-19. Melissa, b. 1860 in KY, died 28 August 1922 in Ironton and was buried in the Woodland Cemetery. Death record lists her as "Minna W. Casey"

Reportedly one of their sons (John, Chester or Harry) was a doctor in Ironton. Chester was married and in Ironton in the 1930 census.

I know little about John's family. Melissa was a Wright and her mother was a Pennington, both families from Lawrence County, Kentucky.

If you can help me locate any family members or records or check the Woodland Cemetery for other family burials, I would appreciate it. You may leave a post here or contact me at <flap@aptalaska.net>
Thanks!
Frankie
